Goya both confronted the brutality, superstition and hypocrisy of his day directly. But he also used fantasy as a form of satire. This was possible because of his rich imagination. But this rich internal life was also possibly partly due to his isolation both from his illness and self isolation to escape a broken world. To convey this I, for one thing, used subtle caricature to make him look more bitter and also removed his neck so that he can hide in the high cravat he is wearing in the portrait; making him almost turtle-like. I also really leaned into the symbolic vignettes by redrawing his los caprichos figures into a composition surrounding him as if they are a physical manifestation of his imagination and anger at the stupidity of the world.
